Westchester County is a primarily suburban county with about 940,000 residents located in the U.S. state of New York. It is part of the New York Metropolitan Area. It was named after Chester, in England, and the county seat is White Plains.

There are six cities in Westchester County, Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, Peekskill, Rye, White Plains and Yonkers. There are 19 towns and villages in Westchester Coun­ty. Any land in the county that is not contained in one of the cities is in a town. A town may contain zero, one or multiple villages. These areas may contain com­munities referred to as hamlets. Hamlets have no legal status and depend upon the town for all municipal government and services.

About Westchester County:

 

Higher learning takes priority in Westchester County. Westchester is home to 23 colleges and universities, as well as numerous business and vocational schools. Westchester Community College is one of the top ranked institutions of its kind in the nation.

 

Recreation opportunities abound with 55 golf courses, fishing, cross-country skiing, camping and swimming, just to name a few. Three major trail ways invite stroll­ing or bicycling. The County has one of the highest proportions of recreational acreage-to-population in the nation.
