About New Rochelle, NY:
New Rochelle, located in Westchester County, New York is on Long Island Sound about 10 miles south of White Plains and a mere 16 miles from Grand Central Terminal. The city, which is named after the French port of La Rochelle, lies on the Long Island Sound east of Mt. Vernon. It is the eighth-largest city in the State and the second-largest municipality in Westchester County.
Major highways include Interstate 95 and the Hutchinson River Parkway. Metro Norths New Haven Line provides rail service to New Rochelle.
Part of downtown New Rochelle was revitalized in 1999 with the opening of New Roc City, an entertainment complex including a 19-screen movie theater, IMAX theater, miniature golf, go carts, an arcade, health club, restaurants, hotel and supermarket. Additional revitalization has resulted from the construction of new luxury residences.
The city has an abundance of recreational opportunities including parks with numerous athletic fields and public tennis courts. With 9 miles of waterfront there are beaches and marinas as well as more than 20 acres devoted to parks and nature preserves. New Rochelle has the private Wykagyl Golf Club plus five public courses in the surrounding area.
In addition to beautiful homes, New Rochelle has many houses of worship, plus excellent public, private and parochial school systems. New Rochelle has six elementary schools, two middle schools, one high school and an alternative high school. It is also home to two colleges: Iona College and the College of New Rochelle.
